Synthetic Turf Demonstration Sites

It's nothing like the "fake grass" of years gone by. In fact, you'd be hard-pressed to know it wasn't real and when it comes to water conservation, you just can't beat it.

Synthetic Turf Demonstration Sites are being established throughout Orange County to provide a venue to showcase synthetic turf and promote its use for conservation. The cities of Newport Beach, Irvine, Lake Forest, and Tustin have teamed with the Irvine Ranch Water District to demonstrate that the latest generation of synthetic turf looks nothing like the tacky “fake grass” they might remember from decades ago.

Each city has recently installed, or will soon install, synthetic turf in areas that range from 1,300 to 3,000 square feet each. The Synthetic turf costs $6-$9 per square foot.

Newport Beach has presently installed synthetic turf at the following two sites, and encourages those interested to take a look at the possibilities.

Durability

Synthetic turf is manufactured by attaching polyvinylchloride blades to a durable porous backing.  Once installed an “infill” material such as sand or recycled rubber pellets are put into the surface. This “infill”   is required to hold the blades upright and provide for a softer, safer, and more natural feeling. Manufacturers say dogs and kids can romp and play on it without causing damage. Pet waste can also be easily removed from synthetic turf without leaving behind any brown spots.

Additional Benefits

An ideal application for this technology is on street medians or the strips of grass located between sidewalks and curbs. Because synthetic turf doesn't require irrigation, it also eliminates irrigation runoff, which degrades asphalt. At a typical residence (with approximately 750 square feet of turf grass) the installation of synthetic turf can conserve approximately 22,000 gallons of water per year. Synthetic turf also reduces the need for fertilizers and pesticides, thereby reducing the amount of pollutants reaching creeks, rivers and oceans. It eliminates grass mowing, reduces air and noise pollution, reduces green waste and saves time.

The city of Newport Beach hopes you consider synthetic turf as an attractive, environmentally sensitive and easy-to-maintain alternative to traditional landscaping.
